I was inspired by my stay in Singapore, where I encountered Chinese New Year decorations that brought good luck for the new year. I spray paint the decorations and allow the negative spaces in their designs to interact with the brushwork. The tall narrow format recalls scroll painting. When I returned to California, I incorporated stencils of everyday objects that had interesting patterns.
