Jacob Berghoef

I am a self taught fine art photographer, with extensive experience in analog photography, developing and printing in my own darkroom, as well as working with digital cameras.

Since 2014, after quitting my demanding job in facilities management and real estate, I focused on simple, natural living. This new way of living is reflected in my work; I am exploring the simpleness and the stillness of pure, natural environments with my camera.

I was born in Gouda, the Netherlands in 1959. I currently lives with my wife and dog in a small farmhouse in the Danish Thy region in North West Jutland.

The special light and colors in this coastal area of Denmark inspired me to develop my abstract realistic and impressionistic style.

My photographs show what I feel when I am in nature. Showing exactly what I see is not important, neither is the technical perfection of the photograph.

Nature is fragile and comes under increasing pressure from the consuming human being. At the same time, nature is also very strong and fights back continuously. Actually, I think it's quite bizarre that everywhere on earth man is fighting nature, trying to impose his will. And that whilst we are completely dependent on that same nature.

With my works of art I hope to stimulate and tease more than just your sight. I hope to achieve that you feel what I felt when I made the artwork; the light, the temperature, the atmosphere.... Sometimes even the smell of a damp autumn forest and the cold of the swirling salty breath of a storm on the beach of the North Sea.

Through my photos, I ask you to reflect for a moment on the nature around you, on the beautiful feeling that nature can evoke, on what we lose when we continue on the road of 'never enough’.
