Large-scale impression of my baseball glove. I couldn't begin to estimate how many balls that glove has caught. I got it as a high schooler and it's stayed with me all the way through coaching my son. With some softball teams and some college in the middle. Actually, I still have a right-handed glove I bought in the 80s so that if someone wanted to play catch with me we'd have the glove they needed.

This is a Reggie Jackson model of outfielders glove. Which tells you that it's old enough that Reggie was still considered an outfielder.

Steve Spencer’s Rawlings Glove tells a life story through a single generic object. We cannot let go of some objects; they remain attached to us like our most potent memories and provoke the same degree of emotion. The importance these objects hold, no matter their ubiquity (I imagine the baseball glove is one of thousands), is palpable, and they begin to feel like part of us. Their absence is as acute as their presence, and we maintain and cherish them as we might our own bodies. They remind us of our lives and the values and lessons we have learned along the way. They are symbols that represent our unique experience in the world, and, often, the most common objects assume this role as their significance to us is made even more powerful by others' inability to understand them. We wish to communicate their story and how it intersects with our own, but part of their potency lies in the fact that they are something that only we will truly understand.

I don't know where to start other than thank you. You put into words something that I feel in a powerful way. Your description and analysis floor me. I will be re-reading it frequently. I could go on. But instead I will go get the glove out of the back of my car and throw a ball into it for a while.
