fong Fai’s wonderfully gestural Abstract Expressionist painting, Fleeting, is defined by a panoply of audacious pigment, thick impasto, and authoritative yet free brushstrokes. It whirls, it swirls, it dances, and romances. A veritable orchestra of color, Fleeting finds the truth of its name in the freedom of its expression, not the longevity of its allure. Freedom is by its very nature impermanent as that which is set in stone is that which allows for no deviation, and what is liberty without the ability to deviate? Abstract Expressionism is the marriage of the fleeting and the permanent. An expression is momentary and often spontaneous, but it becomes indelible when inscribed with a brush on canvas. This harmonious combination of the transient and enduring is the alchemy of Abstract Expressionism and, in many ways, painting as a whole. We love abstraction because it does what we cannot: preserve the ephemeral.
