Timothy Craig’s Space is a marriage of symmetrical abstraction and its gestural counterpart. Space is far more at home on the asymmetrical and expressionistic side of the spectrum (hard-lined geometric abstraction on one end and asymmetrical and gestural painting on the other), yet it maintains a presence in both. The elegant drips and splatters of paint peppering Space’s surface are decidedly abstract expressionist mark-making and come from the chaos of consciousness and not the grid of a paper or edge of a ruler. However, the inner parameters of the beautiful circles hovering on its surface adhere to more stringent geometric guidelines. In fact, they begin to defuse into more gestural expressions at their utter limits. In this way, Craig presents the viewer with two opposing yet harmonious avenues of abstract painting.
