The Hudson River Highlands are a beautiful and tranquil part of New York State. The region is home to some of the most beautiful trails in the country, and the landscape is truly breathtaking. This impressionist painting of the Hudson River Highlands captures the beauty of the region perfectly. The powerful blues, browns and greens create a peaceful and serene landscape.

The painting is part of my Hudson Highland series, which seeks to celebrate the pristine, natural beauty of the Hudson River, recalling an earlier and less complex age.

Remarkably, Dennis Kirby’s Hudson River Highlands maintains a degree of flatness while simultaneously establishing a powerful sense of depth. As an appreciator of painting, who has never attempted to pick up a brush in earnest (I wish I could, but sadly my artistic skills lie elsewhere), I cannot pinpoint precisely where the flatness derives. However, I can make some guesses: the blue hues describing the mountain are rich but sufficiently subdued and uniform that they reject some measure of three-dimensionality. On the other hand, the foreground noticeably recedes into the distance with attention to detail and a variety of form that evokes depth and space. All brought together with a beautiful crown of clouds visually in between the two states described above, Hudson River Highlands is an impressive and original landscape painting.

Thank you for your kind review, John!

In this painting, I experimented with the contrast between flatness and depth. As you mentioned, I paid closer attention to detail in the foreground and used heavier strokes, while keeping the background relatively flat. I also used warm tones in the foreground and cooler, receding tones in the distance to enhance a push/pull effect.

You may have also noticed, I used a heavy impasto technique in this painting, which is a departure from my normal use of drier, more "scrubbed" brush strokes which you will see in later submissions.

I'm happy with the way the painting turned out and I hope viewers will enjoy it as well.
