Undercurrent
Inspired by the cover shot on the Jazz album of the same name by Bill Evans, this was one of those images that struck me as being singularly powerful, enigmatic, wistful, and historically important all at once. So BIG was the keyword. It is 24x50.5x2.
The famous photographer, Toni Frissell, was one of the first to take successful underwater photographs as early as the 1940s, doing so from a bell-jar type iron weight and clear window, a precarious operation.
But I was very interested in producing tonalism and the use of just one color, in this case black, the non-color, to imitate the B/W images of photography. The only thing that I knew it had as a requirement besides that...it needed to be large. This image is a very imposing and a powerful statement in a room. Currently in our guest room, it brings about a very "restful" feel.
